Social Context

For literature I am writing a post on social context.

I will start by saying that in the time period of the book Huckleberry Finn, slavery was still allowed, I'm guessing it was somewhere around the 1850's. And Huck, growing up in this time, didn't know that slavery was wrong. Blacks and Whites were separated. In many places, slaves were not allowed, it was hard for the freed slaves to find work, because nobody would hire them. I think that before Huck and Jim were living on a raft together, Huck saw Jim as no more then Miss Watsons slave, but now I think Huck sees Jim as a friend. Huck is noticing that Jim is just like him, only a different color.
Another thing that separates people is money. Basically, if you were educated, had a good job, and had money, you were put into a higher class. Especially if you owned lots of slaves.

A Comparison of Jim's escape and Huck's escape

For literature this week, I need to compare two runaways from the book Huckleberry Finn. The first is Huck finn. Huck's father was holding him in a cabin in the woods, Huck was not allowed to leave the cabin, unless his father needed him to do something for him. The other is Jim, Miss Watson's slave. Jim was treated fairly well for a slave, but he ran away because he overheard that Miss Watson was planing to sell him. Now to compare.......

Jim had a lot of freedom for a slave, while Huck on the other hand, was basically being held by his own father, he was not allowed to leave without his dad's permission, and sometimes he was stuck in the cabin for days, sometimes without food. Huck's escape was very witty, he made it look like some one had robbed the house, and murdered him, so no one would look for him. But Jim, just basically ran to the island where he thought no one would find him, he knew people would look for him, and he didn't care. He just didn't want to be sold.
I think that Huck and Jim both were desparate to be freed, Huck from his father, and Jim from slavery. Huck also thought hard about his escape. And well Jim...... not so much.

The Game of Stare!

Have you ever played stare? Not the kind of stare where you stare at someone until they blink, or laugh, but when you have to look at a picture for 30 seconds, (see picture above) and then try to remember what was on the picture. It's harder then it sounds, but it's extra hard when you have 9 people, 3 of them under 10. It's fun. But hard. Like when my brother was trying to study a picture, then my cousin (who is two) makes a funny noise or said something funny, and everybody cracks up. Or when my dad (who is not very good at this game (sorry dad, luv u)) is trying hard to study a picture, and someone makes the toddler cry, and then she's crying, my mom and aunt are trying to calm her down. Then the oven beeps and everyone screams "THE BROWNIES ARE READY".

stare is a fun game, but it's funner with 9 people, 3 of them under 10.

I'm remembering all of the good times I had making videos with my friends, my brothers friends, and my sisters friends...... check out my video blogs!

ok. so I'm staying at the beach for a month. A MONTH. that's a long time. We are staying on the Isle of Palms, which is near Charleston. Which is my favorite place in the world. There is *awesome* shopping, and I can't count all of the cool stores we've been into. For example, today we went into a candy store, and they had a taffy machine attached to a moving platform. So the taffy went across the ceiling, and the taffy shot out into the candy shelf! I LOVE TAFFY! I bought my bff a huge bag of candy! (love ya Colleen) so I guess this is the start of my blog. its not very much i guess, but I have all month to write more about Charleston and the Beach!

Freedom

Freedom: Freedom is the right to act according to your own will and not someone else's. To be able to make your own choices. Having no master besides God. Not bound; liberated. John 8:36 - "If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed." Personally, I have not thought about freedom that much, to me I was always "free". When a baby animal is born at a zoo, and they live their whole lives in a cage, they think it's normal, they don't know they're trapped. To them, they are free. Another book that I am reading is a book about Harriet Tubman. She was born into slavery. She knew nothing different then working and obeying her master. And when she heard about the underground railroad, and about how runaway slaves were becoming free, she longed to be free. Her husband didn't want her to go, her parents didn't want her to go. They all told her that she was a slave and there was nothing she could do about it. But she went anyway. And she became free.
