Freedom

Freedom: Freedom is the right to act according to your own will and not someone else's. To be able to make your own choices. Having no master besides God. Not bound; liberated. John 8:36 - "If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed." Personally, I have not thought about freedom that much, to me I was always "free". When a baby animal is born at a zoo, and they live their whole lives in a cage, they think it's normal, they don't know they're trapped. To them, they are free. Another book that I am reading is a book about Harriet Tubman. She was born into slavery. She knew nothing different then working and obeying her master. And when she heard about the underground railroad, and about how runaway slaves were becoming free, she longed to be free. Her husband didn't want her to go, her parents didn't want her to go. They all told her that she was a slave and there was nothing she could do about it. But she went anyway. And she became free.

Maddy,

A lovely post. I'm glad that you admitted that you have never really thought very much about your freedom. I think we are often guilty of taking our most precious gifts for granted. Reading about Harriet Tubman at the same time as you are reading Huck Finn? Providence! What's the title of the book you are reading?

Your example of an animal born into a cage is an interesting picture. I'd love to hear you talk more about this idea. Can you have a mental freedom that isn't controlled by external circumstances? This is an idea that sounds similar to what Jonathan wrote about in his post.
